Lions – MTNZ

Tennessee is not normally known for large wild cats but that doesn’t stop Lions from roaming the plain with an arsenal of riffs and soaring vocals. The band hails from Knoxville and has already amassed a solid following and will be touring select cities throughout the summer. While it would be safe to classify Lions as a math rock band, they also incorporate many other elements into their sound. The vocals ascend, the guitars are often jazzy, and the drums are a strong backbone to the wild animal.

Boston based Fleeta has just released his latest album Zoo which combines elements of downtempo beats, glo-fi, and glitch. There’s a bit of dubstep sprinkled in but it doesn’t exist in the traditional sense, it’s more of an evolutionary step in a untapped direction. The album is best enjoyed with a good set of headphones or speakers, otherwise you’ll miss out on some of the layers. Read More

Our neighbors to the north have yet again proven that they have a wonderfully vast music scene full of great musicians. This week we’re covering a Vancouver based band that has its roots set in folk. And if folk isn’t your thing, they might change your mind after a listen. Dogwood and Dahlia bring a bright and downright cheery twist to the genre. Songs like The Sea and Lancaster Bomber are proof of that, while Wild Oats and Arson slow things down and show they are quite capable of range. Although their self-titled EP is just three tracks, it does a great job at showing you the range this band has.
