This Week On DVD: October 9th

This week, a ton of the movies coming out are throwbacks to the ’80s & ’90s, in one way or another.

Rock of Ages
Deliriously silly rock n roll musical (focusing on ’80s’ & ’90s glam rock) starring Tom Cruise. Read my full review here.

Prometheus
The supposed prequel to “Alien,” except not really, because it happens on a differently numbered planet. Plus Guy Pearce spends the entire film wearing really terrible aging makeup. Other than that, it was a pretty good film. Charlize Theron and Idris Elba co-star.

The Raven
John Cusack’s utterly ridiculous Edgar Allen Poe mystery thriller.

Shut Up and Play the Hits
Four-hour documentary about LCD Soundsystem’s final show. Includes the entire final show, or so I’ve heard.

30 Beats
Remember back in the ’90s, when every other movie being made was about sex? Yeah, this is like that. This is a film about 10 strangers who have random, anonymous sex with each other, and the entanglements that causes. Got terrible reviews.

A Cat in Paris
A girl and her cat break up a Parisian crime ring. Got solid reviews and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars this year, but lost to “Rango.”

Crazy Eyes
Low budget flick about a self-loathing player in L.A. who strings a bunch of girls along until he falls in love with a Manic Pixie Dream Girl affectionately dubbed “Crazy Eyes.” Most critics hated it.

Restless City
Looks a lot like Ramin Bahrani’s excellent “Man Push Cart” but didn’t get reviewed as well. An immigrant lives on the ragged edges of New York City and tries to pursue his vision of being a musician.
